Gray hair is completely natural—but how you choose to manage it is personal. Whether you want full coverage, a softer blend, or something low-maintenance, there are multiple options to fit your lifestyle and hair goals.
As a stylist, here’s how I typically guide clients through their gray coverage options:
Traditional Root Touch-Up (4–8 Week Maintenance)
This is the go-to option for full gray coverage.
A traditional touch-up focuses on regrowth at the root, fully covering grays and keeping your color consistent from roots to ends.
Best for: • Clients who want full coverage • A polished, uniform color • Staying on a consistent schedule
Maintenance: Every 4–8 weeks, depending on how quickly your hair grows and how noticeable your regrowth is.
Express Touch-Up (2–6 Week Maintenance)
Short on time but need a quick refresh? This is your in-between solution.
An express touch-up focuses on the most visible areas—typically your part line and around the face—where gray tends to show first.
Best for: • Busy schedules • Extending time between full appointments • Keeping your hairline looking fresh
Maintenance: Every 2–6 weeks for a quick, targeted refresh.
Gloss (Up to 12 Weeks)
Not ready for full coverage? A gloss is a softer approach.
Instead of completely covering gray, a gloss helps blend and soften it, making it less noticeable while adding shine and tone to your hair.
Best for: • First-time color clients • Low-maintenance routines • Enhancing your natural color
Maintenance: Around every 8–12 weeks, depending on your desired result.
Highlights (8–12 Week Maintenance)
If you prefer a more dimensional, blended look, highlights are a great option.
Rather than covering gray completely, highlights help diffuse and camouflage it by blending it into lighter pieces throughout your hair.
Best for: • A more natural, lived-in look • Less noticeable grow-out • Clients who don’t want harsh root lines
Maintenance: Every 8–12 weeks, making this one of the lower-maintenance options.
So, What’s the Best Option?
It really comes down to your lifestyle, your desired look, and how often you want to be in the salon.
Some clients prefer full coverage and regular upkeep, while others love a softer, more blended approach with fewer appointments. There’s no one-size-fits-all—and that’s exactly why consultations matter.
If you’re unsure where to start, we can create a plan that works for you, your routine, and your hair goals.
